Because Earth's atmosphere blocks most gamma rays, observations are generally conducted by high-altitude balloons or spacecraft. In the 1960s defense satellites designed to detect X-rays and gamma rays from clandestine nuclear testing serendipitously discovered enigmatic gamma-ray bursts coming from deep space.

How do we observe gamma rays?

Since gamma rays have so much energy, they pass right through the mirror of a standard optical telescope. Instead, gamma rays are detected by the optical flashes they produce when interacting with the material in a specially designed instrument such as a scintillation detector.

Why do we observe gamma rays?

These are produced by spectacular events in the Universe such as stars exploding, matter falling into black holes and celestial objects colliding. By collecting gamma rays, astronomers are able to see these violent events and can judge exactly how they shape the Universe.

Can gamma rays be observed from ground?

First, gamma rays do not penetrate Earth's atmosphere, and therefore cannot easily be studied from the ground. GRO will overcome this difficulty by its location above our atmosphere, in Earth orbit. Second, because of their high energies, gamma rays cannot be reflected or focused like other forms of light.

Can gamma rays be seen?

On the maps, the brightest gamma-ray light is shown in yellow and progressively dimmer gamma-ray light is shown in red, blue, and black. These are false colors, though; gamma-rays are invisible.

Is there a gamma ray telescope?

The Fermi telescope has two main instruments. It has a large telescope that finds gamma rays with 10 million to more than 300 billion times the energy of visible light. The spacecraft also has detectors that observe gamma-ray bursts. Gamma-ray bursts are brief flashes of gamma rays.

Why are gamma rays difficult to detect?

Cosmic gamma rays are difficult to detect for at least two reasons: (1) there are not many of them compared to other things that "look" like cosmic gamma rays to a detector, but aren't; and (2) they have so much energy that it is hard to "capture" one at all!

Do TVS emit gamma rays?

Older CRT televisions emit levels of gamma radiation, or X-rays, due to the TV's use of electron beams. Then again, they are too insignificant to cause any adverse health problems. Present day LCD and Plasma do not produce X-rays. However, they do emit low levels of electromagnetic radiation.

Where are gamma rays seen?

These are found in all rocks and soil and even in our food and water. Artificial sources of gamma radiation are produced in fission in nuclear reactors, high energy physics experiments, nuclear explosions and accidents.

Are gamma rays invisible?

On the maps, the brightest gamma-ray light is shown in yellow and progressively dimmer gamma-ray light is shown in red, blue, and black. These are false colors, though; gamma-rays are invisible.
