What type of reactor was at Chernobyl?
At the time of the Chernobyl accident, on 26 April 1986, the Soviet Nuclear Power Programme was based mainly upon two types of reactors, the WWER, a pressurised light-water reactor, and the RBMK, a graphite moderated light-water reactor.
Is RBMK a BWR?
The fundamental heat cycle of RBMK is identical to the BWR cycle and is analogous to the cycle of thermal generating stations. However, compared to BWRs used in Western power plants, the RBMK-1500 and RBMK-1000 have a number of unique features.
Which is safer PWR or BWR?
Since the fluid is maintained at high pressure, so the PWR core volume is less. For the same power generation, core volume of the BWR is comparatively larger. Since the working fluid loop is separated from the primary loop, so PWR is less risky in spreading of radioactive materials owing to leakage.
Is Chernobyl an active power plant?
Although no longer a working power station, Chernobyl was never fully abandoned and still requires constant management. Spent nuclear fuel is cooled at the site.
What was the design flaw in Chernobyl?
A peculiarity of the design of the control rods caused a dramatic power surge as they were inserted into the reactor (see Chernobyl Accident Appendix 1: Sequence of Events). The interaction of very hot fuel with the cooling water led to fuel fragmentation along with rapid steam production and an increase in pressure.
Did the Soviet Union fix the reactors?
Most of the flaws in the design of RBMK-1000 reactors were corrected after the Chernobyl accident and a dozen reactors have since been operating without any serious incidents for over thirty years….RBMK.

Why RBMK have graphite tips?
They inserted the control rods—graphite-tipped cylinders of boron carbide that slow or stop a nuclear reaction—too far into the reactor. This decreased its output so much that there was not enough energy left over to power the water pumps when the switch-over occurred.
What is the difference between a PWR and a BWR?
The main difference between a BWR and PWR is that in a BWR, the reactor core heats water, which turns to steam and then drives a steam turbine. In a PWR, the reactor core heats water, which does not boil.
Where is boiling allowed in PWR?
In comparison, there is no significant boiling allowed in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) because of the high pressure maintained in its primary loop—approximately 158 atm (16 MPa, 2300 psi).
